Antique Tavern Tables

Tavern tables were not necessarily used in taverns but just a term that made reference to a type of table that was popular around the Revolutionary War period and before. These tables were short compared to tables of today and a box stretcher, or a piece of wood that stabilized the legs connecting them horizontally connected most.
A tavern table served several purposes. Most common was a rectangular style that served as a meeting place of friends and family in a kitchen but it was not uncommon to find in other areas of the home. The tops would be designed as round, oval and square for different uses in pantries, bedrooms or even beside the front door. Colonial residents needed a solid, stable surface on which to work, eat or place items and this was the most important part of any tavern table.
Simple in design, an antique tavern table will be made of solid maple, walnut or oak wood and is less than four feet long. There will no doubt be scars and cuts on the surface that consists of two to three boards being bonded together. A narrow but deep apron will adorn the area directly below the top, some with a built in drawer. An antique tavern table is more valuable for its history from the 1700s than for the creative workmanship. But anyone who is lucky enough to locate an original period piece will treasure its uniqueness in simplicity.
Tavern tables stayed popular in the Western world and many different styles were designed after this period. This is not to say that tavern tables made in the 19th century are not antiques; they just are not considered period antiques. Scalloped aprons, splayed legs or ornate designs may be found on these tables that are over 100 years old and still quite a find. The mixture of different woods also began to be used in tavern tables during the 19th and 20th century to add color and texture.
This is not to say that tavern tables were not used in taverns all over America and Europe. Some of these tables can also hold historical value to the past popular meeting places of our ancestors. It depends on what one is looking for in going in search of an antique tavern table. There are many uniquely designed pieces that hold a French, European or Colonial style. The types of wood used and the structure can tell any collector what period of time the table has come from.
Antique tavern tables can range anywhere from $200 to $30,000. If you think that you have found an authentic period piece, it is always best to seek an appraisal from a reputable antique dealer.
