Mahogany Antique Dining Tables

Mahogany antique dining tables are largely an English institution. Mahogany doesn't grow in the UK, but in the 1700s was imported from Cuba and Puerto Rico. Not only did mahogany furniture become more beautiful with age, it was very durable, too. Mahogany technically refers to wood of the species Swietenia mahagoni, which is also known as Cuban or West Indian mahogany. Honduras mahogany, or Swietenia macrophylla, is closely related.

All species of Swietenia are protected. "Mahogany" may also refer to related species of Swietenia, Khaya, and Entandrophragma. In the case of Entandrophragma, the name "mahogany is attached as a suffix, hence "sipo mahogany," "New Zealand mahogany," and "Philippine mahogany," which is not of the Swetenia genus.

Mahogany antique furniture tables generally show even, straight grain without pockets or voids, though wavy-grained mahogany tables can be found. The wood darkens over time, and when polished has a slightly red sheen. It is a favorite of woodworkers because of its durability and workability. Mahogany is generally used in the finest furniture because the use of some mahoganies is restricted. In the past it was used in boat construction because of its ability to resist wood rot. A top quality mahogany dining table seating 10 can cost US$10,000 - even if it isn't antique!

Expect mahogany antique furniture tables to be somewhat more expensive than those made of other woods because of the wood's relative scarcity. Older mahogany antique furniture tables will usually be darker, though there is some variation among species. But the general consensus is that mahogany makes exceptional quality furniture that becomes more beautiful and coveted with time.
