Antique Drop Leaf Dining Tables

Drop leaf tables have been used in America since the late 1600s.  The gate-leg table was one of the earliest types and was common from 1690 to 1725.  Drop leaf tables were generally made of walnut or maple and were built solidly with four legs that were connected to stretchers.  They have two extra legs that swing out to support the leaves.

In approximately 1710, an American innovation was devised by the name of the butterfly table.  These were generally smaller than gate-leg tables, but they were named due to their wing-shaped leaf supports that pivot out from the stretchers.

Between 1730 and 1790 swing-leg tables that were hinged along the rails, were the most popular type of drop leaf tables.  Although this type was more graceful to look at than the gate-leg table, they were less sturdy, as there were only two fixed legs.

Drop leaf tables are ideal for using to eat breakfast and even for playing games.  They can add a touch of class to any room in any home.
